This unique group blends together its relaxing style; traditional jazz structures; an eclectic assortment of contemporary musical styles into a captivating, often meditative, healing musical vibration.
 
Frequently welcoming guest performers, the core players are a piano/bass/drums trio which lays down a lush melodic and rhythmic center around which the musicians improvisational skills revolve. When not performing the musicians in Shikantaza are recording as a means of improving their musical skills and perceptions.

The word 'shikantaza' refers to a form of buddhist meditation. It literally translates as 'just sitting'. Shikantaza packs meaning, music, and emotions into performances while exhibiting discipline in precise dynamic movements.
One of the most in-demand keyboardists in New Jersey, Douglas Miller studied with F. Ming Chang, the late Norman Schnell (pianist for Gene Krupa), and Lillette Jenkins-Wisner. 2009 performance events for Miller included Bitches Brew, Trenton Avant Garde Festival, numerous "straight jazz" projects, and production of soundtracks for independent film and video clients.
Bernhard Geiger, a native of Germany, studied in France for years, and continues to travel regularly between his home and Europe. A lyrical and powerful contrabassiste, Bernhard's primary performance vehicles have been Threebop (Germany), Swing Line (France), and the Eric Haltmeier Trio (US) .
A percussionist offering a melodic and nuanced touch to the Shikantaza sound. Brandon Lewin studied for many years with the late Tony Denicola, the beloved trenton, nj-based legend who replaced Gene Krupa in the Harry James band in the 1940's. Gerry Hemingway became Brandon's teacher in recent years.
Brandon has performed with Mystery Train, The Pedestrians, Heavy Trucking, and Wayne's Remains.
